Yacht Safety & Compliance
Ensure your vessel always has the following:
Personal flotation devices (PFDs) for each person on board.
1 Type IV throwable flotation device
Correct number of fire extinguishers for the size of the vessel
Day & night visual signaling devices
Sound signaling devices
Additional recommendations will be provided and sourced with client approval.
Engine(s) & Generator(s)
Inspect hoses for cracks or loose fittings
Start & run engines & generators
Inspect the water pump & heat exchanger for leaks
Check the condition of the raw water strainer, baskets, and gaskets
Fluid checks for steering, transmission, engine oil, & coolant.
Check that oil pressure and coolant temperature are within normal range
Inspect exhaust hoses & mufflers for leaks/loose fittings
Verify generator voltage and hertz
Exercise through hulls
Inspect air filters
Test tension on the belts.
Electrical System
Inspect batteries (voltage, signs of leakage or physical damage)
Check DC wiring for loose or corroded connections
Bonding system: check for corroded or loose connections
Inspect all interior, exterior, underwater & navigation lights
Inverters & chargers for proper operation
Test tension on the belts
Inspect the breaker panel.
Plumbing
Inspect Fresh Water System: water pump, inspect all faucets & showers for leaks, inspect aerators and shower heads for calcium/limescale buildup, inspect tank, pipes, and fittings for leaks, and check tank level monitor for proper function.
Inspect the black water system: macerator pump(s), flush all toilets, inspect holding tank filter(s), inspect hose connections for leaks/signs of wear & tear, & check the tank level monitor.
Inspect Grey Water System: check sump pump(s) & inspect filter(s) if equipped.
Bilge Pumps
I will check to make sure your bilge pumps are clean, operating well, and have working alarm circuits.
Test the float switches and ensure your vessel is equipped with a couple of spare pumps and switches.
HVAC
Turn on the A/C system
Verify the seawater pump is operational & discharging overboard.
Inspect strainer
Run the system in cooling & heating mode
Record outlet temperature in cooling & heating mode for each unit
Inspect the air inlet filter
Run electric heaters, if equipped, to confirm proper operation.
Electronics
Check the operation status of the chartplotter/GPS, radar, VHF radio (confirm if both receiving & transmitting), autopilot (if equipped), AIS (if equipped), and depth sounder/fish finder.
Steering System
Top off steering/hydraulic fluids.
Exercise rudders with full lock-to-lock turns.
Inspect hydraulic hoses, rams, & pumps for leaks
Inspect rudder posts for signs of corrosion or leaks.
Ground Tackle
Bow rollers, anchor shackle: check for cracks in the surrounding structure & inspect the swivel.
Test the windlass: take off the cover, lubricate necessary points, and lay eyes on the wire connections. Inspect the chain and its connection to the boat.
Galley
Verify all appliances are operational
Inspect refrigerator(s), ice maker(s), & freezer(s) for ice buildup and defrost if necessary
Check garbage disposal (if equipped).
Window/Portholes
Inspect all windows & portholes for signs of leaks
Open & close all windows & portholes for ease of operation.
Canvas/Plastic Enclosures
Inspect canvas for wear & tear
Inspect zippers for ease of operation
Inspect stitching for wear & tear
Inspect windows for scratches or signs of cracking.
Hull/Superstructure
Inspect gel coat for any cracks or gouges
Inspect the overall condition of the gel coat (scratches & oxidation).
Inspect above-waterline through-hulls for signs of cracking.
